![]() ![]() The problem was that the tutorial used a MIA material. I’m not advanced enough yet in Maya to just figure it out on my own, but with a few Google searches, I realized that mental ray was no longer available and I found a work around with Arnold. The Arnold renderer in Maya 2017 is fantastic, however, I was looking at a tutorial a couple of weeks ago for Maya 2016 and it used mental ray MIA_Material_X. ![]() Last week I wrote about Working with Arnold Shaders in Maya 2017 and talk a bit about how mental ray was discontinued in this version. Changes to rendering in Autodesk Maya 2017 This is really only a problem if you’re opening older projects or want to follow an older tutorial that uses it. mental ray is no longer being licensed by Autodesk. *shrugs shoulders*.In Maya 2017, Autodesk has replaced NVIDIA’s mental ray with Arnold for Maya software. ![]() Maybe it was simply the cut I had + Windows 10. I did everything I could to optimize the times as well as talk to renderman artists for tips, but I & they couldn't do anything (there are a limited number of settings to really mess up anyways). This was my first time really using it, and the render times are astronomical. Another caveat is, it is difficult to determine "similar amounts of noise" so the render times should be taken as more of a generality than "this is the fastest this scene can render." I'm sure many of you can get faster render times. This comparison is not at all intended to be X is better than Y, but simply to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of various render engines for myself. I chose the scene because of how deceivingly complex it can be to render clean due to the heavy reliance on in-directional rays. Along these lines, I've recently done a comparison using a cornel box & various scenarios among some popular render engines (Maxwell, Arnold, Renderman RIS, Vray, & Octane) that might be interesting for you al to look through. ![]()
